Food and Drink: Tried and Tested. This week, Natalie Wain tries Harrods Knightsbridge Christmas hamper for size.
THE BLURB: The Knightsbridge Christmas hamper is presented in a large brown wicker basket topped with a fetching brown leather lid.
Its Christmas-themed contents include: Biscuit assortment; Luxury Christmas pudding; Box of 6 mince pies; Brandy butter; Thick cut marmalade with orange liqueur; Christmas conserve; Christmas breakfast teabags; Christmas spiced coffee; Assorted English chocolate selection; Gold chocolate bar; Rose and lemon Turkish delight; Harrods premier Cru Champagne; Harrods claret; Harrods Sauvignon blanc.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS: Its certainly a hamper! Theres no denying that most things Harrods just scream quality, and the Knightsbridge is no exception. Looks-wise its characteristically opulent – its worth buying one for yourself just to keep the hamper for post Christmas storage.
Make it past the luxe leather lid and youll find the produce inside has also been given the full Harrods Christmas treatment. Biscuit tins, coffee jars and tea containers are beautifully embossed and are refillable.
THE TASTE TEST: Hampers are perfect for dipping into over the Christmas period. The Knightsbridge is bursting with after-lunch indulgent treats and, being Harrods, you can rest assured that everything is of a fabulous quality.
Christmas spiced coffee is smooth and warming and a delicious accompaniment to delicately-flavoured Turkish delight or sumptuous chocolates. This said, pride of place has to go to the Christmas pudding – rich and perfectly balanced, its completely delicious served with the accompanying brandy butter, and washed down with the extremely quaffable claret or Champagne.
PROS: The flavours and assortment of products evokes a true sense of Christmas without ever being over-powering. Pretty re-fillable tins are a bonus.
CONS: 6 mince pies hardly seem enough!
VALUE FOR MONEY: If youre buying a Harrods hamper, youre clearly going to be paying for the institution as well. 150 isnt cheap, but you do get enough booze and sweet delights to keep an entire family happy for a week. The hamper and many of the containers are also designed to be re-filled. A truly fabulous gift or a luxurious treat the family wont forget.
